Do's and Don'ts (in summary)

- Do be on time to all meetings.
- Do try to be friendly and open to new and different ideas and ways of doing things.
- Do exchange business cards, particularly if one is handed to you. Give and accept cards with two hands.
- Don't become alarmed if someone asks you a question that you feel is personal in nature. Chinese tend to move to frank, direct questions more quickly than Americans. Comments and/or questions about age, appearance, and family status are not meant offensively.
- Don't give lavish gifts to your guests. Never give a clock as a gift.
- Do sample all foods offered to you. Expect to participate in several toasts. As a general rule, if you clean your plate, more will be offered to you.
- Don't be alarmed if you find people staring at you. Though not as common in Beijing, in rural areas, it is common for Chinese to follow foreigners with their eyes. They are curious.
