May 2006 official opening of NSF Beijing Office, and related activities

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is a United States government agency responsible for promoting basic research and education in science and engineering. International activities are supported throughout the NSF portfolio. The Foundation's Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE) has a leadership role in promoting and coordinating international cooperation, and manages NSF's overseas offices in Paris, Tokyo, and Beijing.

The NSF Beijing Office is affiliated with the American Embassy in Beijing and facilitates NSF activities in China. The Office is located in the Silver Tower in the Chaoyang District of Beijing. The NSF Beijing Office has three major roles:

• Facilitation: Promote collaboration between the science and engineering communities of the United States and China.
• Representation: Serve as a liaison between NSF and agencies, institutions and researchers in China.
• Reporting: Monitor and report on science and engineering developments and policies in China.
